The journey through Rwanda will offer a glimpse into the country’s vibrant culture and the opportunity to visit the stunning Volcanoes National Park. As you depart, the scenic drive through western Uganda unveils a landscape of rolling hills, villages, and fertile farmlands, offering glimpses of local life and culture. Approaching the base of the Rwenzori Mountains, the terrain becomes progressively more mountainous, and the air grows crisper, signalling your arrival at this alpine wonderland.

RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONA PARK

The Rwenzori Mountains, often referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon,” are an awe-inspiring natural wonder nestled in the heart of Africa. Rising majestically along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, these towering peaks are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rwenzoris are renowned for their dramatic, glaciated summits, some of which soar above 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), making them Africa’s third-highest mountain range. What sets the Rwenzoris apart is their unique alpine environment, characterized by dense vegetation, moss-draped forests, and cascading waterfalls, which create a surreal and otherworldly landscape. Trekkers start at 1,450 meters and stay at Sine Hut (2,596 meters), or the more adventurous can continue to Kalalama Camp (3,134 meters) for panoramic vistas. The trek begins in the Afro Montane Forest Zone with a steady ascent of six kilometres through towering trees and abundant birdlife. After crossing a river, it steepens to Sine Camp. Enock’s Falls, just 200 meters from Sine Hut, is a picturesque highlight. The next day offers exploration before returning to Sine Camp or ascending to Kalalama Camp for more stunning views.

Starting from Sine Camp, the trek climbs steep bamboo forests with rich birdlife, including the Rwenzori Turaco and Malachite Sunbird. At 3,000 meters, you reach the Heather zone with towering Giant Heather trees. Kalalama Camp at 3,147 meters offers great views and a hike to Mutinda Peaks for Giant Lobelia plants. After lunch, cross to Samalira Camp at 3,170 meters, offering level walking through Giant Heather-covered ridges and misty streams. Samalira Camp provides stunning waterfall views, with options to explore their base or a moss-covered ridge above.

In the morning you descend through the bamboo forests with fantastic views across the lower hills and valleys to Forest View Camp where you have lunch or a small snack before descending through the Afro Montane Forest Zone with many birds and primates. At the bottom of the steeper descent you reach Nyamwamba Camp where you may rest again before walking out the final 6km to the park gate.

The journey from Rwenzori Mountain National Park to Bush Lodge typically takes approximately 2 to 4 hours by road, encompassing a picturesque transition from the rugged beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains to the serene surroundings of Bushenyi town in south-western Uganda. The road takes you through lush landscapes, charming villages, and rolling hills, offering insights into rural life. After this moderate travel time, you’ll arrive in Bushenyi, known for its warm hospitality.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Queen Elizabeth National Park, nestled in the heart of western Uganda, is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise and a testament to the country’s breathtaking natural beauty. Spanning over 1,900 square kilometres, this diverse and iconic park boasts an incredible array of landscapes, from the sweeping savannas of the Kasenyi Plains to the dense forests of Kyambura Gorge. It’s home to a staggering variety of wildlife, including the famed tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, the largest population of hippos in Africa along the Kazinga Channel, and an astonishing number of bird species, making it a prime birdwatching destination.
